'Big School' Expectations

At Kings Hill Pre-school we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage which makes sure that your child achieves the most that they can in their earliest years of life. We also work with the local Primary Schools to ensure our children are fully prepared for "Big School" when they leave us.

As a rough guide Primary schools expect new pupils into Reception class to be able to achieve the following:

Cutlery Image
  • Share and take turns
  • Cooperate with peers and adults
  • Sit and listen
  • Concentrate
  • Be able to use the toilet and wash hands independently
  • Wipe their nose and put tissues in the bin
  • Dress and undress themselves
  • Hang their coat up
  • Select their own activities
  • Tidy up
  • Be able to use cutlery
  • Open own lunch packs and packaging

In your child's reception year at school the emphasis is on play based learning as it is within the pre-school, rather than academic skills.

Don't worry if your child does not know all of their numbers, shapes or colours. The school will not be expecting them to know them all.

If your child is starting to show an interest in writing then please teach them to write using only capital letters where they are supposed to go and other letters should be lower case.
